PURPOSE:To decrease the tensile stress of a weld zone of metallic strips so as to prevent rupture and to improve rolling efficiency by applying a residual compressive stress by a pressurizing machine to the surface of the weld zone then subjecting the strips to cold rolling. CONSTITUTION:Skin pass mills 8, 8' are provided on the down stream of a welding machine 7 which welds the succeeding metallic strip 1'' and the preceding metallic strip 1'. The welding part of the strips is subjected to skin pass rolling by the pressurizing machine to apply the residual compressive stress to the surface and thereafter the strips are rolled by a tandem rolling mill 9. The tensile stress to progress the defect which is the cause for the rupture is decreased by applying the residual compressive stress to the welding part in the above-mentioned manner. The rupture of the strips from the weld zone during rolling is thereby eliminated and the rolling efficiency is remarkably improved.
