PURPOSE:To prepare a stable hydrophilic or hydrophobic antimony pentoxide organosol at low cost, by peptizing an antimony pentoxide gel, obtained by treating alkali antimonate with an acid, in an org. solvent using an org. base and an org. acid. CONSTITUTION:An antimony pentoxide gel obtained by reacting alkali antimonate with a monovalent or divalent inorg. acid in an amount of 0.1-5 times on the basis of a stoichiometric ratio is separated, washed and subsequently aged at room temp. - about 100 deg.C. Temp. subsequently, said gel is dispersed in a hydrophilic or hydrophobic org. solvent and 2-30% by wt. of Sb2O5 of an org. base such as amines and 0.2-20% by wt. of Sb2O5 of an org. acid such as ABS acid or carboxylic acids are added to the resulting dispersion to peptize said gel and, thereafter, contained water is removed. By this method, a stable hydrophilic or hydrophobic antimony pentoxide organosol can be obtained and can be widely adapted to fire retarding treatment or the modification of a resin.
