A process and apparatus for separating molten uranium (13) from molten salts (6) in which molten salt (6) floats on a portion of the exposed surface of a molten uranium trap (8) or a molten alloy trap, leaving a portion of exposed surface free to discharge uranium or alloy (13) while retaining molten salt (6). In this way clean, massive alloy (14) can be recovered from scrap material which would otherwise be discarded.
