Protected spiral tension spring for gates, doors or like devices for closing off buildings, having a protective covering which can be longitudinally altered and is made of at least two telescopic sleeves which are displaceable in relation to one another and the end regions of which are situated at the ends of the springs provided with connecting hooks which are designed to project in the longitudinal direction of the springs, and are supported at their end faces by the spiral spring body, the said spiral tension spring being designed to permit simple operation with full protection against catching of fingers and being catapulted out if the spring breaks, with a minimum outlay of quantity and/or value of the material used in production and easy and safe handling, in such a way that the sleeve end regions situated at the spring ends are provided with lids which each have a passage aperture for the connecting hook of the associated spring end, and that the other sleeve ends which remain facing the outside wall of the adjacent sleeve in each case across the telescopic displacement section become connected to one another in the most extended telescopic position possible in such a way as to block a further extension movement.
