<p>Ethyl esters of aliphatic carboxylic acids are prepd. by reacting C2H4 with an aliphatic carboxylic acid (I) in the liq. phase and in the presence of (i) an acid catalyst consisting of a W heteropolyacid or an acid metal salt thereof and of (ii) 7.5 (pref. 0.01-5 esp. 0.1-3.5) wt. % water (w.r.t. (I)). The esters may be used as solvents for dyes, paints and inks; as organic raw materials, perfumes and textile modifiers. The ethyl esters are prepd. in 1 step, with high conversions and 98-99% selectivities. By-prod. formation is inhibited.</p> |
