A DC machine having thyristors for commutation has an electrical armature winding having a plurality of active conductors (3 and 4) which participate in the electromechanical energy conversion of the machine. Furthermore, a commutating device having a plurality of thyristors or comparable switching elements (1) is provided, in which switching elements the change from the non-conductive state to the conductive state is carried out by means of external control signals, but the opposite change can take place only when the conductor current is zero. In this case, the switching elements or thyristors are connected to the electrical armature winding in such a manner that they control the conduction or non-conduction of the electrical current in the active conductors for commutation.
