The magnetic field therapy devices that have been available hitherto are used for large-volume treatment. The invention permits the selective, preferential treatment of upper layers of the treated body, e.g. the skin, the skin plus fatty tissue or muscle parts, avoiding a considerable depth effect. In this case, the magnetic fields are generated by several small coils arranged next to one another in one plane. The plane may be flat or curved, rigid or deformable so as to be able, for example, to adapt to the body surface. In each case, two or more part-coils which can be controlled separately or in groups are used. Superposition of their part-fields leads to fields of predeterminable depth effect provided the parameters of coil diameter and coil spacing have been taken into account in the corresponding control program for the coil currents. By appropriate control it is possible to generate field rotations resembling the rotary fields of electrical machines, for example when coils or groups of coils are cyclically driven in the sequence 1-2-3-1-2-3, etc. The part-coils may be fixed with a larger or smaller spacing. <IMAGE>
