PURPOSE:Ascorbic acid represented by a specific structural formula is irradiated with visible rays in the presence of a catalyst of a rhodium complex and a ruthenium complex to produce hydrogen, as the deterioration of the catalyst and the decomposition of the substrate are inhibited. CONSTITUTION:In the presence of a rhodium complex such as chloronorbornadiene rhodium I dimer and dichlorotris(bipyridyl)ruthenium hexahydrate, ascorbic acid of the structural formula is irradiated with visible rays of about 380-800nm to cause the conversion of photoenergy into chemical energy to produce hydrogen. In the process of the present invention, the amount of the rhodium complex is about 0.02-2mM and that of the ruthenium complex is almost the same equivalent. The use of an ethylene carbonate-water mixture as a solvent inhibits the decomposition of the substrate and enables the high-efficiency utilization of the irradiated light. It is preferred to effect the above reaction in the coexistence of an amine such as triethanolamine, because the efficiency of the hydrogen production is increased.
