The probe or collector head is sunk in the ground to collect geothermal heat for use in a heat pump. It incorporates a ring-shaped bit (4) with a chisel shaped cutting edge (7) and a tapered outer surface (6). The inner surface of the bit is cylindrical, defining a central bore (5). A ring-shaped groove (8) in the top of the bit accommodates two concentric tubes or pipes (2,3). The inner pipe (3) has an ID only slightly greater than that of the bore (5) through the bit. There is a flap valve (18) hinged on a pivot (17) in an opening in the side of the pipe, to assist in moving earth upwards. The top of the pipe is screwed to a sleeve (11) with an inward directed flange (13). It may be driven downward by a hammer or ram head (1). This has a groove in the end (9) engaging the outer pipe (2).
