Above the anchorage portion (4) containing a corruqated, peaky, undulating or other locking surface for engaging into the plastics material, there is a smooth cylindrical sealing zone (8) having a circumferential or annular groove (9) into which a sealing ring (10), of a material which is not adversely affected by the heat of insertion, is inserted. The anchorage length (4) may be of truncated conical shape with a criss-cross pattern of recesses on its surface. This arrangement ensures that not only is the insert firmly retained in the thermoplastics material but also a proper seal is formed at its entry, thus enabling the insert to be used in hydraulic and similar equipment where leakage is to be prevented.
