The signature supply order corresponds to the book page sequence, and the lateral alignment is provided by a guide edge. The open signatures are stitched by rotary needles with suitable threads. The threads leave the signature(s) in a spacing corresponding to the width of the stitches. Then the threads, which have passed through the signature(s) from a zig-zag connection and are slipped through the individual signatures at several points. The block of signatures is then lowered by the carrier, rectangularly aligned, and its spine glued.
