The process and the appliance are used to remove dust particles from gaseous media by first generating, by means of a thermionic ion emitter (30), positively charged ions from the beta -phase of Li2O.Al2O3.2SiO2 (eukryptite) and then accelerating said ions in a strong electric field. The ion source (30), which is heated to approximately 800 DEG C to achieve adequate ion emission, in this arrangement is independent of the source of the electric field. Heating of the ion emitter material is effected either via an external power source (33) or, in the case of hot exhaust gases, by the latter. The accelerated and drifting ions reach the dust particles, adhere thereto and thus charge them. The charged particles are forced by the electric field against the oppositely charged electrode (22) where they adhere and can be collected. <IMAGE> |
