A combination (A) of hydroquinone (HQ) and a salicylic acid derivative of formula (I) or its salt is new. R = linear, branched or cyclic 2-22C aliphatic chain, which is saturated or contains one or more double bonds and is optionally substituted by one or more of halogen, CF3, OH, 1-6C acyloxy or -COOH (optionally esterified by a 1-6C alcohol; R' = OH or -O-CO-R1; R1 = 1-18C saturated or unsaturated aliphatic group. Also claimed is a topical cosmetic or dermatological composition comprising (A) as sole tyrosinase inhibiting whitening agent, together with a vehicle.
