<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a barcode reading method which can discriminate each of barcodes more certainly even if barcodes of a plurality of kinds of similar pattern are mixed. <P>SOLUTION: When decoding of RSS_Limited is completed normally (step A15), a control circuit of a barcode reader determines whether or not a white bar of five or more modules exists (steps A16 and A17) at least at one side of the both ends of a contrasting pattern string for a maximum width (four modules) of a bar which may exist when the code pattern is assumed a part of the POS code.
