1399665 Dynamo-electric machines BENDIX CORP 6 Feb 1973 [8 Feb 1972] 5870/73 Heading H2A [Also in Division F2] In a generator comprising an armature shaft 8 mounted for rotation with respect to a housing 2 by a ball bearing 5, the shaft and the housing having different temperature coefficients of thermal expansion, the ball bearing is supported by a hub 15 which is, in turn, supported from the housing by a plurality of spokes 16, the spokes being constructed and arranged to prevent movement of the bearing in a radial direction while permitting limited movement of the bearing relative to the housing in an axial direction whereby differential changes in dimension of the shaft and housing due to changes in temperature are accommodated. The spokes are arranged in two rows of six, the spokes in the two rows being displaced from one another by 30 degrees. The spokes are tightened sufficiently to be prestressed. An auxiliary bearing 13 is mounted on the shaft between snap rings 12, 12A and rotates therewith. The hub 15 has a flange 30 surrounding the bearing 13 with a groove 31 extending around its inner periphery. A wire 32 is mounted in the groove by insulation material, and some of the insulation is cut away when the hub is machined. Normally, there is a small clearance between the outer race of the bearing 13 and flange 30. If the main bearing 5 fails, the auxiliary bearing contacts the exposed portion of the wire to complete a circuit to an indicator lamp 29. |
