1. A circuit for operating an electrochemical cell comprising:
at least one electrochemical cell having a positive terminal and negative terminal for electrically connecting the electrochemical cell to an external load; a resistor electrically connected in series to either the positive or negative terminal of the electrochemical cell, wherein the resistor is in contact with or is within the at least one electrochemical cell such that when current flows through the resistor it generates heat that heats the at least one electrochemical cell; and a temperature controlled switch electrically connected to the cell and electrically connected in parallel to the resistor, wherein the switch directs current through the resistor (High Resistance State) when a temperature of the electrochemical cell is below a predetermined value or directs current to bypass the resistor (Low Resistance State) when a temperature of the at least one electrochemical cell is above a predetermined value.
