PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an EA modulator that suppresses deterioration of extinction characteristics and reduces chirp characteristics.SOLUTION: An electroabsorption modulator comprises: a multiple quantum well layer in which either one of Mg or C, or a combination thereof is added as dopant in a first concentration; and a p-type semiconductor layer in which Mg is added as dopant in a second concentration higher than the first concentration, and which is formed in contact with the multiple quantum well layer.
