PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a high performance zoom lens which is conveniently carried, having a high resolution and a small distortion aberration, and to provide a camera using the zoom lens. SOLUTION: The zoom lens is composed of a first lens group having positive refractive power as a whole and a second lens group having negative refractive power as a whole from the object side, the first lens group being composed of a 1a lens group and a 1b lens group having a positive refractive power as a whole, the 1a lens group being composed of a negative first lens and a positive second lens, the 1b lens group being composed of a negative third lens, a positive fourth lens which is composed by being cemented to the third lens and a fifth lens, and the second lens group being composed of a positive or negative sixth lens, a negative seventh lens and a positive or negative eighth lens.
