A passive proximity detecting device for detecting humans within a detection area and controlling a controlled device, comprising: a sensor comprising a pixel configured to detect infrared radiation emitted by an object in a predetermined temperature range within said detection area, and in response to detecting said object generate a detection signal having a signal level proportional to said infrared radiation emitted by said object received by said sensor; and a processor in communication with said sensor, said processor configured to receive said detection signal, and to derive an object distance using, at least in part, a signal level of said detection signal.
