A self-centring chuck comprises a work-holding part 1 adjustable relatively to a body part 2 in a direction at right angles to the chuck axis by wedge-members or cams 19. The wedges 19 having screwed stems 18 lie tangentially of, and engage grooves in, the body 2. Rotation of the screws causes a radial adjustment of the member 1 which carries the jaws 3 operated by a scroll 4. The adjustment is indicated by graduations 24 on the screw heads 20. In a modification, the taper is provided on portions of the body 22, Fig. 3, and the screw shanks 26 are cylindrical. The chuck is mounted on a spindle by a screwthreaded boss 10 which may be integral with the body 2. The invention may be applied to hydraulically- or hand-operated collet chucks.
