The device has an ageing indicator formed by average distance values (110-150) for indicating ageing of a particle filter, where the device is configured to compare the indicator with a threshold by calculation modules (210-250) and indicate a need for changing the filter when the indicator crosses the threshold. The values indicate a frequency of occurrence of an event e.g. overcharged particle filter diagnostics (1), clogged particle filter diagnostics (2), dilution diagnostics (3), engine performance diagnostics (4) and on-board diagnostics (5), generated by a dysfunction of the filter.
