Modified porous membrane comprises a functionalized porous membrane with primary amine groups, bifunctional spacer molecules having functionality and reacted with the amine groups, and an enzyme, which is bound to other functionality of the bifunctional spacer molecules. Independent claims are included for: (1) preparing a modified porous membrane comprising reacting functionalized porous membrane having primary amine groups with bifunctional spacer molecules under reaction conditions so that a function of the bi-functional spacer molecule is essentially bound to the primary amine groups, and reacting the membrane having the bifunctional spacer molecules with an enzyme under the reaction conditions such that the enzyme is bound to the free functionality of the bifunctional spacer molecules; (2) splitting of complex molecules comprising providing the modified porous membrane, transporting a solution, emulsion or suspension containing complex molecules to be spilt, directly convecting or passing the solution or suspension to the membrane, where a permeate is withdrawn perpendicular to a flow direction or simply flows along an outer membrane surface, the complex molecules are spilt by the action of the enzyme and the split products are removed from the membrane; and (3) an apparatus for splitting complex molecules comprising the modified porous membrane.
