<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid for detecting fingerprints containing ninhydrin, which is capable of being used for detecting latent fingerprints on oil-adhering regular paper or the like in which detection of fingerprints is hard, without causing blurring of fingerprints, blurring of information such as characters other than fingerprints or disappearance of fingerprints, and capable of being easily handled; and a method of detecting fingerprints using the liquid for detecting fingerprints. <P>SOLUTION: The liquid for detecting fingerprints contains: (a) an oil phase including low-polar or non-polar volatile oil; (b) an aqueous phase including ninhydrin and water; and (c) a nonionic surfactant. The oil phase and the aqueous phase are emulsified when the liquid is used.
