A method for reducing the cost to a group insurance plan sponsor of providing some prescription medications to members of the group, comprising the steps of creating a list of less expensive alternative and equally effective medications that may be substituted for more expensive prescribed medications, accessing information relating to at least one prior claim for prescription medication of a member of the group, identifying from the at least one prior claim information relating to the location of the office of the medical doctor that prescribed the prescription medication on the at least one prior claim, contacting the medical doctor that prescribed the prescription medication and encouraging the medical doctor where possible to prescribe from the list of less expensive alternative and equally effective medications where available instead of the more expensive equally effective prescribed medications.
