PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an austenitic stainless steel having excellent pitting corrosion resistance and crevice corrosion resistance in a high concentration chloride ion environment by suppressing the precipitation of intermetallic compounds or nitrides. SOLUTION: The austenitic stainless steel has a composition comprising, by mass, ≤0.050% C, 0.01 to 1.00% Si, 0.01 to 2.00% Mn, ≤0.040% P, ≤0.030% S, 25.00 to 35.00% Ni, 23.00 to 27.00% Cr, 7.00 to 9.00% Mo, 0.001 to 0.100% Al, 0.30 to 0.50% N, 0.01 to 2.00% Cu and 0.0001 to 0.0200% Mg, and the balance Fe with inevitable impurities, and satisfies inequalities (1) and (2): (1) Cr+3.3×Mo+16×N≥56.0, and (2) 150≤4×Ni+100×N≤170 (wherein, Cr, Mo and N denote the contents of the respective components by mass%).
