PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a vacuum cleaner capable of highly accurately removing floating dust in the air. SOLUTION: The vacuum cleaner includes: a motor-driven blower 2 for generating suction air; a suction tool 8 communicating with the motor-driven blower 2 and including a floor surface suction port 11 for sucking dust on a floor surface by the suction air; and an air intake 12 provided at the suction tool 8 for sucking the floating dust in the air by the suction air of the motor-driven blower 2. Wherein, the opening area of the air intake 12 is changed corresponding to the kind of the floor surface. For instance, the opening area of the air intake 12 is widened when the floor surface is a smooth wooden or tiled floor and the dust is easily stirred up to the upper part of a room, especially to the height of the nose and mouth of a user, and the opening area of the air intake 12 is reduced when the floor surface is a carpet or the like and there is a lot of fibrous dust near the floor surface.
