An apparatus, for improved gas/liquid contact, comprising a tower (10) having a series of tray decks (14) and downcomers (24). Tray decks (14) provide gas/liquid contact for mass transfer and the downcomers (24) are required to clarify the liquid before entering the tray (12) below. The trays (12) have at least one downcomer (24) and one adjacent active sump (38). The sump (38) has at least one row of apertures (40) for bubbling vapor through liquid flowing therein, and is separated from the downcomer (24) by a baffle (34). The clarified liquid at the bottom of the sump (38) is sent to the downcomer (24). The liquid entering the next tray (12) can be assured to divide evenly for multiple-downcomer applications. Gas/liquid contact is thereby enhanced through the installation of these apertures (40), and clarification of the liquid from bubbles is thereby improved through the addition of the active sump (38).
