PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader provided with a configuration solving shortage of the capacity of a memory for storing image information without causing complication of the configuration and cost raise due to addition of members, and reading an image by only utilizing an existing configuration without expanding the existing configuration, irrespective of placing position of an original document. SOLUTION: The image reader is provided with an image pickup unit for image reading on the upper part of an original document placing section, and also provided with a configuration reading the image of each page while sequentially turning over the page of an original document having an upward image surface on the original document placing section. In this image reader, the image pickup unit is provided with: distance measuring means 100, 101 measuring the distance from each center-spread page of the original document, and a focusing mechanism for causing a reading light from the original document to focus a reading means 25. The image reader is provided with a control unit for detecting the direction of turning over pages and the status of placing the original document on the basis of the information from the means 100, 101 to control the operation of the focusing mechanism.
