The device has a drive (1.1) which moves a tool towards a workpiece (2) to achieve a certain gap width. A second drive is provided for a vibration element. During a relative motion between the tool (1) and workpiece (2) a tension is provided and measured and which terminates the gap (s) and or for detection of a ridge on the surface to be processed.
