PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve heat transfer efficiency by forming a thin liquid film having the largest possible area on the heat transfer surface of a heat transfer member. SOLUTION: In the regenerator body, plates 29 having vertical heat transfer surfaces are juxtaposed in the horizontal direction, and engine cooling water is made to flow from the lower side to the upside in the plates 29. A tray 32 for storing a liquid mixture is provided above the plates 29, and first spray holes 35 are formed at predetermined spaces in the longitudinal direction on lower sides of both side surfaces of the tray 32. Second spray holes 36 having larger diameters than those of the first spray holes 35 are formed above the first spray holes 35. Thus, at the initial stage of operation, the liquid mixture is supplied in contact with the heat transfer surface from both the first and second spray holes 35, 36, thereby forming a liquid film in a wide range. In a state that the liquid mixture supplied to the tray 32 is decreased to a predetermined quantity, the liquid mixture is supplied in contact with the heat transfer surface from the first spray holes 35, whereby while a wide liquid film range is maintained, the liquid mixture is made to flow down like a liquid film, thereby maintaining high heat transfer efficiency.
