摘要 <p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce a torque shock and the like in engine starting with a compact construction using general devices. <P>SOLUTION: Driving of a supercharger 10 in an intake passage 4 is freely switched between forward and reverse directions. An engine control unit is provided with a first valve 8 upstream of the supercharger 10 in the intake passage 4, a first passage 20, which has an end opened to the atmosphere, the other end connected to the intake passage 4 downstream of the supercharger 10 and a second valve 18 disposed in the passage, and a second passage 24, which has an end connected to the intake passage 4 between the first valve 18 and the supercharger 10, the other end connected to an exhaust passage 14 upstream of a catalyst 16 and a third valve 22 disposed in the passage. When starting of an engine 2 is required, before the starting, the first valve 8 and the second valve 18 are closed, the third valve 22 is opened, and the supercharger 10 is driven in the reverse direction to discharge the air in the intake passage 4 to the exhaust passage 14. The engine is started with negative pressure in the intake passage. When supplying secondary air, the first valve 8 is closed, the second valve 18 and the third valve 22 are opened, and the supercharger 10 is driven in the reverse direction to supply the air to the exhaust gas.
