A method for async. transmission of useful data in data network between a physical layer (1) and an ATM layer (2) in a layer interface (4), and in which the useful data is transmitted in several data cells of fixed length. Synchronization of the in-coming async. data cells with the layer interface clock takes place in a sync. store (10). Before synchronization, the content of the identification fields of the data cells is extracted and then fed into the input multiplexer (8) so that the intermediate stores can be addressed directly from the ATM-layer. An Independent claim is given for a layer interface for ATM useful data transmission.
