PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To quickly check the displayed map, and to utilize navigation at the time of performing the portable navigation system and performing the action of viewing the portable telephone. SOLUTION: A portable navigation device 10 comprises a travelling direction detection means 29; a destination guidance means 30; a display means 28; a motion determination means 31; and a map display control means 25 for controlling the map display mode, corresponding to the travelling direction detected by a travelling direction detection means 29 and the guidance direction of the destination guidance means 30, when the motion determination device 31 has determined that the pedestrian has not viewed displays the map on the display means 28, such that the travelling direction or the guidance direction is set displayed facing up, based on the result of determination of the motion determination means 31 that the pedestrian views the display means 28. When the user views the display screen of the portable navigation device 10, the time loss for the rotation processing of the display direction of the map to the correct direction is eliminated, and at the same time, the power-saving mode is restored.
