A ballast washing device (19) and a ballast breaker (20) for sharpening the ballast are located in between the excavator chain used to remove the ballast from the track (3) and the screen device (14). The machine frame (4) is movable along the track on a rail vehicle (5) and includes an excavator chain, a first conveyor belt (15) for transporting ballast from the chain to a screen device and a second conveyor belt (16) for transporting the cleaned ballast to a discharge end of the machine.
