Dihydroxy aluminium alkali metal (including ammonium) carbonates of general formula (OH)2AlOCO2X where X is alkali metal or ammonium are prepared by reacting an aluminium alcoholate of a C2-C4 alcohol with an aqueous solution of a bicarbonate in the proportion of at least 1 mole of bicarbonate per mole of alcoholate to obtain a precipitate which is separated from the aqueous mixture. Examples relate to the production of sodium, potassium and ammonium containing compounds of the above formula prepared by adding aluminium isopropylate, preferably as a thin stream, to vigorously stirred solutions of the corresponding bicarbonate in equi-molecular amounts. A gelatinous product was precipitated which on stirring became granular and was subsequently filtered. The precipitate may be air dried for several days then oven dried to a moisture content of 15 per cent at 55 DEG C. Other alcoholates specified are the ethylate and tertiary butylate.ALSO:An antacid compound for the relief of excess gastric acidity comprises a dihydroxy aluminium alkali metal (including ammonium) carbonate of general formula (OH)2 Al OCO2X where X is alkali metal or ammonium (see Group III). The compounds may be employed in tablet or equivalent form. The acid consuming power of the compound is compared with that of sodium aluminium carbonate and a mixture of aluminium hydroxide and sodium bicarbonate.
