A process for refining steel comprises directing a stream of oxygen containing gas into contact with a bath of molten impure iron, ferrous scrap and flux such that impurities exothermically react with oxygen, and 1 part of SiC for at least every 10 parts of scrap, in excess of the scrap required to keep the process thermally balanced, is added to the charge. Ferrous scrap, SiC containing material, molten impure iron and flux are added in that order the SiC containing material preferably containing 96% SiC and is charged in bulk form. Scrap usually comprises at least 30% weight of the total molten charge and can exceed 50% weight.</p> |
