PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a lighting system which lights a metal halide lamp by an electronic ballast and which can prevent occurrence of starting failure by making insulation breakdown rapidly between a pair of electrodes and shifting to arc discharge smoothly at the time of starting the lamp. SOLUTION: The lighting system is constructed of the metal halide lamp that has an arc tube in which a pair of electrodes are arranged inside and at least a metal halide and buffer gas for starting are filled, and when the inner diameter of the arc tube is made D (mm) and the distance between the electrodes is made L (mm), the relational expression of L/D≥2 is satisfied, and a resonance starting type electronic ballast for operating the metal halide lamp.
