PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a soluble polyfunctional vinyl aromatic copolymer having improved heat-resistance, thermal decomposition resistance, solubility in solvent and processability. SOLUTION: The vinyl aromatic polymer is produced by the cationic polymerization of a monomer component containing 20-100 mol% divinyl aromatic compound (a) at 20-120°C in the presence of a quaternary ammonium salt using a Lewis acid catalyst and an initiator expressed by general formula (1) (R<SP>1</SP>is H or a 1-6C univalent hydrocarbon group; R<SP>2</SP>is a p-valent aromatic hydrocarbon group or aliphatic hydrocarbon group; Z is a halogen atom, a 1-6C alkoxy or acyloxy group; and p is an integer of 1-6; when two or more R<SP>1</SP>or Z are present in one molecule, these groups may be the same or different).
