PURPOSE: An optical system for head mounted displays is provided to magnify image lights output from a self-luminous type element by using an optical convergent relay lens system. CONSTITUTION: An optical system for head mounted displays magnifies an image to a predetermined ratio and includes a single light emitting display element(10), an X-prism(20), a pair of relay lens systems(30a,30b), and a pair of reflecting mirrors(40a,40b). The single light emitting display element is self-luminous and emits a predetermined image light. The X-prism splits and reflects the image light homogeneously. The relay lens systems magnify or focus the respective image lights split at a reflective surface of the X-prism and transfers the result. The reflecting mirrors are implemented in a vicinity of left and right eyes with a predetermined reflection angle such that the image lights which are magnified or focused via the respective relay lens are to be reflected to each of the both eyes of a wearer of the head mounted display.
