An elastomeric seal comprising an ordered elastomeric composite material

An elastomeric seal (44 in Fig. 2) comprising an ordered elastomeric composite material 48, the ordered elastomeric composite material comprising an ordered arrangement of a number of first elstopmeric phases distributed uniformly within a continuous matrix second phase. The second phase may be formed from an elastomeric material that is relatively harder than an elastomeric material that is used to form the first phases. Each first phase can be of the form of a core 52, and the second phase can be formed from a number of shells 54 that each surround a repective core 52, the cores 52 and shells 54 are aligned coaxially with one another to provide a cellular structure 50. The seal being typically of the form of an annular ring (44 in Fig. 2) adapted for use in a rotary cone drill bit.
