PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a computer system capable of optimal file arrangement regardless of the type of a secondary storage device. SOLUTION: When instructed to newly store a file by a host computer 1 with a command comprising file identification information, a file management/command management means 23a of a secondary storage device 2 notifies a new file address determination means 26 of the instruction. The new file address determination means 26 determines an optimal area as the area for registering the new file in consideration of the characteristic of the file and the configuration, etc. of its own secondary storage device among free areas grasped by reference to a disk management table 25b. The address of the determined area is matched with the file identification information and registered in a local file management table 27.
