PURPOSE: A video signal stretching method is provided to compose a table storing stretch values corresponding to the size of input luminance signals, thereby preventing the flickering or saturation in the screen stretch and realizing the high quality display by stretching a display range of an input video signal in the vertical direction. CONSTITUTION: A video signal stretching method includes the steps of dividing a maximum dynamic range into a plurality of areas, storing stretch rates for the divided areas in a table, detecting maximum and minimum values of the dynamic range for an input video signal, calculating maximum and minimum values of a hardware range by the stretch rates, and carrying out white or black stretch for the input video signal according to the calculated maximum and minimum values. The hardware range of a display system is divided into a plurality of areas by different stretch rates according to a plurality of areas divided from the dynamic range of the input video signal.
