PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a resin composition by which the resin composition having excellent dynamic properties, dimensional stability, heat resistance, or the like, especially excellent flame retardance with shape retaining effects during combustion and especially suitable for producing sheets or films having a small thickness can simply be obtained. SOLUTION: This method is to produce the resin composition comprising a phyllosilicate in which the average distance between layers of the (001) face measured by a wide angle X-ray diffractometry is≥3 nm and a part or all of laminates are≤5 layers. The phyllosilicate is dispersed in a thermosetting resin or a mixture of the thermosetting resin with a thermoplastic resin. The method comprises a step of mixing 100 pts.wt. of the thermosetting resin or the mixture of the thermosetting resin with the thermoplastic resin with 0.01-100 pts.wt. of the phyllosilicate and 30-1,000 pts.wt. of an organic solvent and preparing a resin varnish composition and a step of distilling off the organic solvent from the resin varnish composition.
