<p>A method of compensating for losses in a tuneable laser filter that includes a tuneable material (B, D in Figure 4; A, C in Figure 5), and an amplifying material (G in Figure 4; E in Figure 5), wherein said materials have mutually different compositions. The invention is characterised by placing the tuning material (B, A; A, C) and the amplifying material (G; E) in mutually parallel relationship; by causing the amplifying material to cover the tuning material solely from place to place as seen in a direction perpendicular to the plane of the tuning material; injecting charge carriers into the two materials simultaneously; placing the tuning material (B, D; A, C) at such a long distance from the amplifying material (G; E) as to avoid diffusion of charge carriers from the tuning material to the amplifying material to a degree sufficient for an adequate number of charge carriers to be present in the tuning material (B, D; A, C) to enable the filter to be tuned to desired wavelengths.
