PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To efficiently utilize a storage space. SOLUTION: This mass memory storage device for reading data stored in a mass memory storage medium 22 where data are stored in an almost uniform density includes a support 20 constructed so as to accept a medium and to support the medium. A driver 24 is operatively connected to the support 20, and when the device operates in prescribed form, the driver 24 rotates the medium at an almost constant rotating speed. A reading head 26 for reading the data stored in the medium is positioned adjacently to the medium, and is movable with respect to the medium. A read channel arrangement 28 for processing the data read by the reading head is operatively connected to the reading head. The channel arrangement 28 has a read channel data processing speed which changes in accordance with a speed at which the reading head reads the data from the medium and is almost continuously variable. As a preferable example, the device is a CD drive.
