<p>The invention is based on the unexpected discovery that xenobiotic compounds (e.g. pesticides and PCBs), even at the relatively low levels at which they may appear in food and other environmental sources, may cause significant weight gain in individuals exposed to them by inhibiting natural weight controlling systems in those individuals. The invention provides methods and materials for helping to measure, avoid or control these inhibitory effects by providing various systems for assessing and comparing the individual effect (or 'Chemical Calorie Rating') of different xenobiotic compounds and the items or diets which may contain them. These systems are based on a structured approach whereby a number of factors, including the effect of the xenobiotic against each of a plurality of weight controlling systems present in a test subject, and its persistence in the test subject, are factored together to permit useful comparisons to be made. Also provided are a variety of tailored compositions (such as micronutrients and adsorbants) for the purpose of counteracting the xenobiotic's inhibitory effect on the weight controlling systems of an subject.</p> |
