PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent the overheating of an empty oven by judging the presence of a food stuff in a cavity through only an infrared sensor for measuring a temperature. SOLUTION: When an input of cooking start is made a temperature distribution in a cavity is detected by an infrared sensor 8 and the presence of a food stuff is judged based on the detected temperature distribution. When the presence of a food stuff is judged, the starting of heating thereafter is permitted. However, when the absence of the food stuff is judged, a magnetron 61 is driven thereafter to start the heating of the food stuff and, then, the temperature distribution in the cavity is detected by the infrared sensor 8 when a predetermined period of time is elapsed and the presence of the food stuff is judged based on the detected temperature distribution. In this case, when the presence of the food stuff is judged, heating is continued, however, when the absence of the food stuff is judged, the heating is stopped forcibly. According to this method, when the heating by the magnetron 61 is started under a condition that no food stuff is present, the heating is stopped in the initial stage of the same whereby the waste of an electric power is prevented and bad affection to instruments due to heating of an empty oven can be prevented.
