PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To effectively prevent the occurrence of a defective product based on a defect such as damage to aluminum itself by at least mechanically roughing by polishing with a brush exhibiting specific values of bending elastic modulus and the strength of one hair stiffness. SOLUTION: In the case of manufacturing a support for a lithographic printing plate, a plate made of aluminum or aluminum alloy is mechanically roughed by a brush of the constitution having a bending elastic modulus of 10000 to 40000kg/cm<2> and the strength of one hair stiffness of 500g or less. At the time of the mechanical roughing, a polishing material having mean particle size of 10 to 80μm is used. A brush roll of nylon is used. The number of revolutions of the brush is suitably 100rpm, and a support roll made of rubber with the straightness held excellent is used. Polishing material slurry liquid is scattered on the aluminum plate to be conveyed by a sprayer before it passes the brush roll.
