The invention relates to a method for controlling a coin-operated gaming machine which has play symbols in the form of rotating symbol carriers, cards, dice or the like which can be controlled into random positions at the end of each game by means of a random-number generator and a central control unit, so that winning games or losing games are obtained. The object of the invention is to propose a method for controlling a coin-operated gaming machine, by means of which, irrespective of the outcome of the game which last ended, the same initial positions for a further play can be set for all the machines. Provision is made, according to the invention, for setting the play symbols to a loss combination after the play symbols have stopped at a win combination and the start of a new game has not taken place within a predeterminable timespan which is monitored via the system clock of the central control unit. This ensures that a player coming to the machine after this predeterminable timespan has elapsed sees a loss combination of the play symbols and can then assume that no win has previously been achieved and he therefore has a greater chance of a win.
