The invention concerns a method for improving the fireproofing of building elements, completely or partially made of combustibe material. It involves the outer surfaces of the building elements, or at any rate those surfaces facing the expected direction of fire, being painted with a varnish, made up of water glass and a metal compound, which on drying/ hardening of the varnish converts the latter to a water- insoluble mixed silicate. This forms a tight film which becomes plastic at combustion temperatures but does not crack or break off but instead remains as a tight membrane on the element and prevents oxygen from passing into the element and combusting it. During the initial phase of the fire, the pressure from pyrolysis gases inside the element can open pores in the plastic silicate film and blow out to the fire where they are combusted. When the gas development has ceased and there is no pressure difference between the outside and inside of the silicate film, the transport of gases ceases, for example the transport of air through these pores. |
